Rule
# 1 - NEVER use a synthetic based brake fluid. For competition
we only use Glycol based fluids such as:
- AP
Super 600 (we race with this!)
- AP
PRF
- Castrol
SRF
- Brembo
LCF
In a
nut shell :
Synthetic based fluid DO NOT absorb water (moistur ). This
is the problem with all brake hydraulic systems a remote resevoir
is used. The fill cap allows for venting of the fluid, which
will draw air from the atmosphere ( which of course contains
water - and in a humid climate even more water ) to allow
the fluid to be pressurized through the system.
Because the sythetic base will not absorb moisture, moisture
will collect within the system as the brakes are used. The
moisture will collect at the lowest point of the hydraulic
system (the calipers).
Now
that moisture has accumulated behind the piston - The so-called
temp rating of 570° is now down to 212°. This moisture
shall then boil within the brake fluid (this is call airiation)
causing a spongy pedal feel and longer stroke. The wierd thing
is once the fluid cools down the fluid shall recover (the
pedal becomes firmer and stroke is reduced).
The only time a synthetic brake fluid should be used is when
paint is more important that brakes (show cars - old Corvettes
- Harley's)
There is no performance or racing brake fluid I am aware of
that would be acceptable to use with a synthetic base.
The only warning about these Glycol based fluids are :
- KEEP AWAY FROM MAGNESIUM
Magnesium is not used for brakes, but they are used for clutches
which can be hydraulic activated.
AP
Racing Brake Fluid
AP
Racing Brake Fluid was developed specifically for serious
racers. AP brake fluids provide and maintain a higher resistance
to chemical breakdown, higher dry boiling point, and improved
pedal feel. In the heat of competition, don't risk fluid failure
with a lesser quality fluid.

AP Racing Fluid Information >>
All AP
Racing Brake Fluids are Polyalkalene Glycol Ether based and
are not a silicone based fluid. AP Racing do not sell and
do not recommend using a silicone based brake fluid with any
of its products. More Information

AP
550
Designed for high temperature applications
Resists chemical breakdown
Low viscosity reduces chances of aeration
AP
600
Formulated for severe to extreme brake temperatures
Extremely low viscosity
Superior resistance to chemical breakdown
Lubricates and cleans brake system internally
Brembo
LCF High Temperature Brake Fluid
Glycol based to avoid absorbing water into the system creating
aeration during heavy use. LCF 600+ is an ideal choice for
racing or performance use - combining ultra-high dry boiling
point, low compressibility, and consistent pedal feel.
